Helicopter Scale Masters: May 12-14
What a great time this was! First and foremost, I want to thank the Woodland Davis Aeromodellers and Gonzalo for putting on such a great event. Events like HSM are the heart and soul of the hobby and they take no small amount of work to put on. Great job, guys!!
The weather for the event was sunny and temps ranged from the 70s to mid-90s. The wind was a little more than anyone wanted to see, but I don't think it stopped anyone from flying.
The two flight stations had pilots almost constantly for most of the event, but I rarely noticed a long wait to get to fly.
The Woodland Davis Club had burgers and cold drinks all three days. (Thank you to all who cooked!)
The flying was great other than the wind. We were able to get some great flights on the newly painted Mi-8. We also flew the TGM water bucket around and were pleasantly surprised at how well it did with the extra weight. We also flew it with a 20-foot-long line. It was such a unique sight to see. I had to have a caller as I could not see the bucket when going in for water.
The event had more than 25 registered pilots and lots of spectators throughout the weekend. Two full-size Bell Jet Rangers arrived and were on display for Saturday. A turbine jet flew a couple demonstration flights that were most impressive and a crowd pleaser for sure. The event had lights set up, and we flew well into the night all three nights.
It was great to see everyone, and to sit around in the evenings and be able to laugh and have a good time.
The helicopters on site were all top-notch and the pilots flying them were no exceptions. Multiple turbines were on site. The smell of jet exhaust could be noted throughout the weekend. The sound and smell of a turbine is awesome.
TGM was a proud sponsor and provided the awards for this year's event. Congratulations to everyone that received one. I'm looking forward to hanging mine on the wall!
I can't wait until next year. Thank you to everyone that attended and made this event. We will definitely be back for HSM 2023!
